Born in 1978 in Magunje, Zimbabwe, Daniel began sculpting at the age of 19. At the young age of 3,
his father passed away leaving him to later care for siblings and his own child. Forced to seek out
employment at an early age after finishing his secondary education at Charles-Clack, as a means of
support, Daniel taught himself the necessary skills to begin his trade as a sculptor. “Without the
stones, I couldn’t survive,” says Daniel.
In 1998, a year after beginning his journey to become a sculptor, he joined Chitungwiza Arts Centre as a
junior artist. With the support of other sculptors from the center to mentor and inspire, Daniel has continued
to further his work and perfect his craft as a sculptor.
Inspired by the spirits and traditional Shona art, he has worked to specialize in the abstract. With traditional
themes shaped by his own family experience and the Shona culture, he has incorporated his own
semi-abstract style into a myriad of themes. Favoring opal stone, his work has a very contemporary polished
look and feel to it.
Daniel is an emerging young sculptor from the latest generation seeking recognition among the international art
community. |
